There’s something in the water and I ain’t going in ,It don’t matter what you pay me you won’t see me swim. Florida Keys featuring Wily Bo Walker for Swamp Music Players. A cover song from an island band that was overlooked and we have been craving to cover since our inception as a collective! We waited for the perfect man to front the song and it was Wily Bo Walker an esteemed gentleman of the United Kingdoms swamp-music scene. The Florida Keys is about what lurks just under the surface , what prowls just beyond the corner of your eye , it’s the damp sopping obsessions rotting out the foundations of your sanity. Journey with us to the Florida Keys they don’t mention in the travel brochure!

lyrics

There’s someone fishin’ at 2:00 AM
The fog is rolling in like it don’t give a damn
There’s weddings and cruise ships
And things on the beach
Scratch my head, I get no relief

There’s something in the water
And I ain’t going in
It don’t matter what you pay me
You won’t see me swim

I’ve heard the tales they tell the youth
Now listen to me, son
It’s head is like a woman
And it’s tail is 10 feet long

Many lost souls have passed me by
Said “Buddy, we’ll see you there
If not by the grace of God, then with the Devil’s care”
They say this stuff will kill you but the first time it is free
Stealing cigarettes from a dead man
In the Florida Keys

That log looks like a body
As it’s floating by the cove
I took a step and lost my shoe
My foot is getting cold

Every journey it begins
A mile down the road
I think of things and don’t look back
Oh, baby, c’mon let’s go

Many lost souls have passed me by
Sayin’ “Buddy, we’ll see you there
If not by the grace of God, then with the Devil’s care”
They say this stuff will kill you but the first time it is free
Stealing cigarettes from a dead man
In the Florida Keys

Stealing cigarettes from a dead man
In the Florida Keys

‘Mikayla’ released NOV 15th on ‘Swamp Sandwich’ EP

Swamp Music Players – Mikayla (Featuring Steve Greene)
Original Single
VICTORIA, Canada
Release Date: 15th Nov 2024

In Summary
Swamp Music Players, hailing from Victoria BC, Canada, deliver a captivating narrative in their latest original single, “Mikayla.” Led by founder John Edward Kayden, the core group paints a vivid picture of the emotion behind a love gone awry due to the pursuit of fleeting pleasures. Collaborating with Detroit artist and producer Steve Greene, the track was revitalized, infusing new energy and emotion into the story of a lover scorned and disappointed. Greene’s involvement as both a featured artist and producer adds a unique depth to the song, elevating it to new heights with his brilliant performances and production values.
Released on 15th Nov 2024, “Mikayla” stands out for its raw and authentic approach, avoiding overproduction to maintain a retro-futuristic quality reminiscent of past decades of electronic and garage rock.

The song delves into the enigmatic world of “scene girls,” exploring their
passion for art amidst toxic environments. Recorded at Steve Greene’s Battlechamber music studio in Detroit, the song takes listeners on a journey through haunting melodies and evocative lyrics, showcasing the intersection of retro-rock and retro-tech in a truly unique musical experience.

Q & A
Tell us about the key contributors to this project.
Song by the core group of Swamp Music Players with lyrics and chorus composed by John
Edward Kayden. John Edward Kayden is the founder of the Swamp Music Players and had
written and composed the idea of a song about a love that went wrong due to a frivolous and inconstant girls relentless pursuit of happiness by abusing anything that brought immediate pleasure and her pathologically using people to achieve her temporary goals. The song is about how always taking the most easy path often results in a very difficult life that people who chase expedient pleasures ironically are the least happy and live miserable lives.

The song was long an abandoned project until Detroit artist and producer Steve Greene decided to helm the production and re-compose the track , perform vocals and the instrumental performances. The song Mikayla was a unique opportunity for Steve Greene who often mixed and mastered songs by Swamp Music Players to become more involved and become the featured artist on one of our songs. Steve Greene’s brilliant performances and production values brought a new energy to ‘Mikayla’ with his input that the song would be from the emotional focus of a lover scorned and disappointed.

Q – What’s the story behind this release?

The song is really about the phenomena of the most obsessive and unique “scene girls” that haunt downtown after music shows. Not just your regular fan and definitely an outsider that is on the periphery and often attracts sketchy peer group of downtown artists , junkies and runaways. The scene girls that often are very passionate about art and highly curated esoteric interest in music but only as a consumer and rarely pursue their own artist talent. These scene girls often are both emotionally abused and abusive and vanish from the music scene to become solitary or vanish under mysterious circumstances. Strong in passion for art but often surrounded by toxic ne’er-do-wells.

Q- Tell us what makes this release stand out and why it’s significant

Steve Greene’s brilliance and acumen as both a producer and a musician really elevates the
track. The song was purposely raw and not overproduced using various authentic recording
techniques using retro technology to give the song a retro-futuristic quality of previous decades of electronic rock and garage rock.

Q- Where did the recording take place?

The recordings took place entirely at Steve Greene’s Battlechamber music studio in the city of Detroit.

Q- What was unique about the recording process?
Steve Greene was only given the lyrics and the chorus progression to work with but was able to construct the song as it was intended from scratch!

Q – Could you share a memorable quote about this release or your journey as an artist?
“The song has been reimagined an almost retro-futuristic Cyberpunk quality to its LoFi-Rock , its the fusion of retro-rock and retro-tech gives it the feel of Garage Rock they would listen to in Neuromancer or Max-Headroom universe.

Q- Is there anything additional that would be valuable for curators to know?
Steve Greene is owner of the Battle Chamber studio as well as a musician, film composer and 1/3 of the band Voyag3r. Steve Greene is notable for composing the score for the soundtrack of the film “New York Ninja”. https://battlechamber.com
